Abstract
In this talk, I consider the conformal diagram for a 1+1 dimensional evaporating black hole in a "baby universe" scenario, demonstrating that the "pinch off" point is in fact a kind of quasiregular singularity characterized by points possessing two future-directed light cones and two past-directed light cones. Such singularities appear in the 1+1 trousers spacetime, and the 1+1 evaporating black hole is in fact conformal to a region of the latter. I then discuss a class of emergent Lorentz signature theories, and argue that they can provide a microscopic description for these singularities.
